Edmonton has always been the most working-class and least Conservative part of the north London borough of Enfield, tucked in its south-eastern corner near the River Lea, adjoining strongly Labour Tottenham in the borough of Haringey to the south. Indeed, Edmonton was held by Labour continually from 1935 to 1979, before it fell to Ian Twinn in the Thatcher landslide of 1983. Further large swings have occurred in 1987 when Twinn increased his majority from 1,200 to 7,000; and in 1992 when it was dramatically reduced again, to just 593 votes - one of Labour's best performances in London.

With such volatility it is always hard to predict the next result. However, if the Conservative rule of 1979 to 1997 is about to come to an end, Edmonton will return to its older and more traditional allegiance to Labour.
