The constituency of Fife Central is centred on the Scottish New Town of Glenrothes and also takes in coastal industrial towns such as Buckhaven and Methil. This is safe Labour territory, and the SNP advance here in 1992, mirroring that in much of Central Scotland, was not enough for them to be considered serious challengers in 1997.
