Gateshead East and Washington West, in southern Tyneside, continues the very strong Labour voting traditions of this independently minded conurbation in the North East of England. There are only pockets of Conservative strength to offset the dominating Labour loyalties of Gateshead and Washington New Town, which both contribute electors to this new constituency, which should be safe for Labour.
