Stretching from the western outskirts of Barnsley to the Peak District uplands, this constituency is not quite as monolithically Labour as may be expected from the association with Yorkshire's prime coal-mining town. The Conservatives do collect quite a few votes towards the more rural western half of the seat. However, overall this remains safe Labour country.
