Grimsby is known, above, all for its fishing industry, and in most of the country, the independent-minded fishermen, proud of their self sufficiency, tend to cast their votes for the Conservatives. However, in Grimsby, fishing has long been conducted on a large commercial scale with much associated land-based industrial employment, and there is a strong Labour tradition in the town. Grimsby is a self-contained town with a more diversified industrial base that might be suggested by the marine heritage. There are leafy residential areas as well as council estates and the dockyard areas, but it is the Labour vote that dominates, and Labour's MP, Austin Mitchell, should be safe.
