The flat and prosperous agricultural land that stretches west from Hull towards Selby is a landscape of villages and farms, the only substantial town being Howden, dominated by an imposing church. Many of the electors of Howden and Haltemprice live in affluent suburbs on the outskirts of Hull itself. However, all of these areas are essentially Conservative and this is a safe Tory seat.
