As one moves away from the centre of London, the suburbs tend to become more spacious and affluent. From the select village-like atmosphere of Harrow-on-the-Hill to comfortable suburban areas such as Pinner and Hatch End, the constituency of Harrow West has the air of the safe Conservative seat that it is. The Liberal Democrats do quite well in some parts in local elections and the non-Conservative vote was fairly evenly split between them and the Labour Party in 1992. This only serves the reinforce the Tory Party's natural hegemony in this part of John Betjeman's 'Metroland'.
