The controversial Labour MP, Peter Mandelson, won the run-down industrial seat of Hartlepool, on England's north-east coast, in 1992, having served as an apparatchik at Labour headquarters where he was credited as being the driving force behind many of the party's reforming measures. A frighteningly bright intellectual may seem out of place in such a down-to-earth constituency, but this curious marriage now provides a safe Commons seat for one of Labour's most driven front-benchers.
