In 1983 Leeds West was the stage of a famous victory for the then Liberal Party and its particular brand of 'community' or 'pavement' politics. However, Michael Meadowcroft, the Liberal victor, was narrowly beaten in 1987, and he was one of those members of the former party who subsequently declined to join the new Liberal Democrats and remained with the 'continuing' Liberal Party. Both Liberals and Liberal Democrats fought Leeds West in 1992. Both did badly. Labour's battled its way to victory in this essentially working-class seat, which they will now expect to hold.
