The outer south-east London suburbs that contain Beckenham are the quintessence of English semi-detached suburbia. Closer in towards inner London, around Penge and Anerley, older Victorian and Edwardian housing takes over, and here Labour and the Liberal Democrats pick up quite a few votes. However, the balance of affluent, middle-class voters creates an overall safe Conservative seat.
