Tam Dalyell, well known for harrying Margaret Thatcher over the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the Argentinean cruiser Belgrano during the Falklands conflict, has represented this part of Central Scotland since 1962. Located in the nondescript industrial/rural landscape of West Lothian between Edinburgh and Glasgow, this revised seat has seen a respectable showing for the SNP in some local elections, and the Nationalists were regularly runners-up to Dalyell in the former seat. Labour should be confident of holding at the general election, but should continue to look over its shoulder for fear of an SNP challenge.
