Liverpool has seen many political changes since the war. As late as the 1950s there was significant voting along religious lines, with a Protestant 'orange' working-class voting Conservative [and Unionist]. The 1970s saw a local Labour Party dominated by the far left Militant Tendency, while at the same time the Liberals were gathering votes through the application of their particular brand of 'community politics'. They replaced the Conservatives as the main opposition party in the city, and for a time even gained control. Things have now settled down. Although there is quite a mix of housing in Liverpool Walton, the roots of the electorate lie in the traditional working class, and these roots now lead to a loyalty to Labour. The voters of Liverpool have united behind Labour in the face of adversity and this is a safe Labour seat.
