Llanelli lies just beyond industrial Glamorgan, in the south west Welsh county of Dyfed. Economically Llanelli has more in common with the industrial areas to the east than the more rural areas to the west. Coalmining traditions and manufacturing industry predominate, but culturally this is a distinctly Welsh seat where about half the electorate speak Welsh. The non-Labour vote is split between the Conservatives, Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats, so a Labour share of about half the vote can deliver substantial numerical majorities.
