Ashton-in-Makerfield is the largest of a number of small traditional working-class towns which make up the new constituency of Makerfield, to the south of Wigan and on the western fringes of Greater Manchester. There are better-off areas in the north-west of the constituency, but most of the seats owner-occupiers tend to be of quite modest means and not far removed from their traditional class roots. The overall result is a safe Labour seat.
