There are quite affluent areas within Manchester Withington and a significant professional and managerial population. However, these white-collar voters tend to be Manchester's equivalent of Inner London's liberal intelligentsia, and their votes cannot be counted on by the Conservatives, who do less well here that the socio-demographic make-up might suggest. There was a strong swing to Labour in this unchanged seat in the 1992 election, prior to which the constituency looked more marginal. Labour's Keith Bradley now looks safe.
