Mansfield, at the heart of the Nottingham coalfield, has reverted to its traditional Labour loyalties. These were tested during and after the 1984 miner's strike when local miners spurned class solidarity and Arthur Scargill's NUM and kept working. There are comfortable suburban areas with a not insignificant Conservative vote, but the overall the votes of this community are cast for Labour.
