The remote and mountainous seat with the Welsh name of Meirionnydd Nant Conwy contains much of the Snowdonia National Park, the slate mining community of Blaenau Ffestiniog, and coastal towns such as Barmouth. Incomers tend to be restricted to the coast, and a majority of the electorate are Welsh-speaking. The past decade or two has seen the Welsh Nationalist Party, Plaid Cymru, marshall much of the Welsh-speaking vote throughout Wales behind its banner. In this part of north west Wales this has delivered electoral success. Plaid's Elfyn Llwyd should continue to hold this constituency, which is big on landscape, but rather short on electors.
