Buckinghamshire's rapidly expanding New City of Milton Keynes acquired an extra seat in January 1989. It was clear that both seats would fall to the Tories, but not by how much, and it was far from clear who would be in second place. In the event Labour came second in both, but in North East, by far the most favourable of the two for the Tories, they are a long way behind, and the Lib Dems split the vote with them almost evenly. There are more rural wards here, less council housing and more middle-class voters. Conservative MP Peter Butler should have few problems.
