Robert Waller wrote

Like much of the rest of the county, North Norfolk had for much of this century a tradition of agricultural trade unionism and a rural working-class Labour vote - Labour held this seat from 1945 to 1970, when it finally fell to the Tories. Since then the Labour tradition has continued to decline, and they are now in third place. Conservative Sir Ralph Howell will expect no resurgent threat to his five-figure majority.
