The industrial and port town of King's Lynn is the main population centre in Norfolk North West, which is otherwise typified by agricultural villages and small resorts on the coast. Labour held the local seat as recently as 1970, and the constituency is also notable for having been represented by Christopher Brocklebank-Fowler, the sole Conservative MP to switch to the Social Democrats in the 1980s. Labour remains strong in Kings Lynn, but this is more than offset by the strength of the Conservatives elsewhere, and this should be considered a safe Tory seat.
