Oldham West and Roydon, to the north of Manchester, is an area formerly dominated by the cotton industry. The poorer areas at the centre of Oldham, with large immigrant populations, are safely Labour, but much of the rest of the constituency is more mixed, and, as in many textile towns, sees closely fought battles between the Conservative and Labour parties. However, Labour MP Michael Meacher, who is standing in this new seat, will realise that in normal circumstances Oldham West and Roydon will be a safe seat for him.
