In the most recent round of boundary changes the south-western part of Wales has been granted an extra seat. This has led to major changes affecting the historic county of Pembrokeshire. The whole of South Pembrokeshire, with around 30,000 electors, has been removed to join the western part of Carmarthenshire in a brand new seat. In return, around 12,000 voters around Fishguard in the north of the county have been returned from their link with Ceredigion (Cardiganshire). This seat is now centred on the northern part of the county, around the Preseli hills. The main towns are Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, and Fishguard. The seat also includes the tiny cathedral city of St David's plus a dramatic coastline, and the islands of Ramsey, Skomer and Skokholm.
Politically, Preseli Pembrokeshire must rank as a Tory-Labour marginal. Labour gained Pembroke with a majority of 755 in 1992. In 1997 they will be confident of gaining Preseli Pembrokeshire with at least that margin of comfort.
