From the outer suburbs of Southend, up into rural Essex, this area saw dramatic growth in private housing during the 1980s. Although not highly prosperous, this seat boasts some of the highest levels of owner-occupation in Britain, and has a Conservative majority to match. The Liberal Democrats come a distant second and have no real prospects.
