Robert Waller wrote

Richmond, which embraces the prosperous farmland of the northern Vale of York, the northern Yorkshire Dales, and the military camp at Catterick, is held by Doncaster-born Conservative high-flyer, William Hague. When he was given ministerial responsibility for Wales there was much criticism of his lack of Welsh credentials. Having entered parliament at one of the few by-elections which the Tories defended successfully, he must now consider himself secure.
