Southend contributes by far the larger proportion of this constituency's electorate. The eastern part of the town is more working-class than the west, but Conservative voters predominate even here. Add in comfortable communities like Rochford and Great Wakering and the agricultural flatlands that run eastwards until they slip under the muddy waters of the North Sea, and we have a safe Tory seat for principled right-winger Teddy Taylor.
