In 1983 the former Liberal seat of Roxburgh, Selkirk and Peebles, in Scotland's beautiful Border country, was split in two. Both of the new seats are currently held by the Liberal Democrats. The constituency's main market towns of Jedburgh, Hawick and Kelso are set in good farming country with grand country houses. The Conservatives must ache to win Roxburgh and Berwickshire from the Liberal Democrat MP Archie Kirkwood, but this will be a difficult, although not necessarily impossible task.
