The constituency boundaries in the Grampian region of north-eastern Scotland were considerably altered by the most recent Boundary Commission, but essentially this new seat is the successor to the Kincardine and Deeside division, which saw a Liberal Democrat gain in a by-election in November 1991, but a Conservative regain at the general election only a few months later.

Both parties will be hopeful in the new seat, which also includes a section of the Liberal MP Malcolm Bruce's Gordon constituency. The Liberal Democrats are probably stronger on Deeside, which runs all the way from the 'royal' areas around Ballater and Braemar to the Aberdeen borders; the Tories fight back in Kincardine, which includes the port of Stonehaven and the rolling farmland of the Mearns. The Conservative champion will be the present Kincardine and Deeside MP George Kynoch. The Liberal Democrat challenger will be a distinguished baronet, Sir Robert Smith.
