Nottinghamshire's Sherwood was once that rare phenomenon, a Tory-voting mining seat - and unlike Yorkshire's Selby, Sherwood is centred on an old coalfield, one of the most prosperous in the country, until the spectre of pit closures finally came its way in the 1980s. Then many Nottinghamshire miners felt betrayed by the Tory government, after they refused to participate in the miners' strike, and Sherwood finally fell to Labour in 1992. This time Labour's Paddy Tipping looks set to hold the seat with a decisive majority.
