Southend is a large town of 150,000 on the southeast Essex coast, long a premier holiday resort for Londoners, especially Eastenders. The western end of town is the most residentially desirable and, although it was a prime target for the Liberals for years, it has always remained safely in the Tory fold. Paul Channon has held the seat since 1959 (in fact it has been held by members of the Channon family for over 80 years) and the worst damage he has experienced is a reduced majority of 8,000. Expect no surprises here.
