Physically, this Teeside site looks the very model of a Labour stronghold. It includes Billingham, where a massive ICI chemical plant dominates an industrial skyline. Yet, for all but two years, from 1924 to 1945 the then seat of Stockton on Tees was represented by Harold Macmillan, later to become Tory prime minister in 1955. Postwar Labour dominance has only really been challenged by the rise of the SDP - the defecting Labour MP for Stockton North's ancestor was William Rodgers, a member of the 'Gang of Four'. He lost the seat to Labour in 1983 and Labour's MP Frank Cook should have no problems maintaining his five-figure majority over the Tories in 1997.
