Most of the seat of Stroud, south of Gloucestershire, is physically part of the scenic Cotswold range of hills, one of the most residentially desirable areas in Britain. Unsurprisingly it is safe Tory country, although Labour picks up a reasonably sized second-place from the town of Stroud itself and one or two industrial valleys, where they can even win local elections in a good year. Environmental concerns also loom large here - Green Party candidates have been elected to district councils, and the Greens gained a respectable 2,000 votes in the 1992 general election. But no matter how diverse the challengers, Conservative Roger Knapman will surely serve another term in the Commons.
