The voters of suburban Sutton and Cheam, to the south of Greater London and once a part of Surrey, clearly think and vote differently on national and local issues. They consistently elect an overwhelmingly Liberal Democrat council (47 Lib Dems to four Tories) while returning Lady Olga Maitland as Conservative MP with a five-figure majority - the disparity is no doubt due to fear, not of the Lib Dems, but of a Labour government. The Liberals did briefly hold the seat once, after their so-called 'false dawn' of 1972. But their long-term hopes in Sutton were dashed, and it has to be said that the Tories are favourites to win once again.
