The newly created seat of Airdrie and Shotts inherits a majority of its electors from the former seat of Monklands East, held by Labour leader John Smith prior to his tragic death in 1994. The new seat, with an industrial Scottish profile, remains essentially Labour, although it has some attributes, such as an SNP surge in the 1994 Monklands East by-election, that could give the Scottish Nationalists a distant hope of mounting a challenge.
