There are many deeply safe constituencies in Britain for the two major parties, but at least they are all, usually, contested - with one exception. That is the seat of the Speaker of the House of Commons - such is West Bromwich West. This is because the Speaker's incumbency goes traditionally unchallenged by any of the three major parties. Betty Boothroyd, Labour MP for West Brom West since 1974, is the Commons' first woman Speaker, and will only attract nuisance opposition. It is worth noting, though, that even if this were not the case, this industrial area would still safely return a Labour MP and did so, when Miss Boothroyd was not Speaker, in 1992.
