Although County Durham is associated in many people's minds with coal mining and an entrenched Labour hegemony, Bishop Auckland includes much rural farmland and the high moors around Teesdale, notable for long hard winters. These naturally Conservative areas do not deliver enough voters to cause Labour too much concern, and the traditional Labour loyalties of the more industrial areas will be enough to see Labour's Derek Foster safely back in parliament.
