The hard core of Greater Manchester's Worsley seat is deep blue - but it consists of just one ward, surrounded by a sea of Labour red. This is not due to poverty, ethnic voting or urban decline - much of Worsley is predominantly owner-occupied and nearly all-white, and households with second cars are not uncommon. The reason that Labour MP Terry Lewis, who has represented Worsley since 1983, can breathe freely is the profoundly anti-Tory political culture. As in nearby Wigan, Labour loyalties run deep.
