Once the mining capital of North Wales, Wrexham is no longer dependent on mineral extraction and economic diversification has created something of a local boom - unemployment is now below the Welsh average. It was once a Labour stronghold, but lost some of its area in 1983 to the then new Clwyd South West constituency. This, coupled with the defection of local MP Tom Ellis to the SDP, reduced new member John Marek's majority to 424 votes in 1983 - but then that was a disastrous year for Labour anyway. Labour has bounced back since then - the majority in 1992 was 6,716, and it is unlikely that Marek will face a close contest this time.
