Ynys Mon is better known to non-Welsh speakers as Anglesey, which it was called before 1983. The name change was reasonable, since 62 per cent of the population speak Welsh, many as their preferred language. When, in 1987, Ieuan Wyn Jones was elected Plaid Cymru (Welsh Nationalist) MP for the seat, following a scandal involving the incumbent Tory MP Keith Best, the change appeared even more logical. Ynys Mon has had a mixed history: four parties have held it in succession - Liberal 1929-51, Labour1951-79, Conservative 1979-87, and now Plaid Cymru. This rural seat is a popular retirement area - good for the Tories - and it is now a Plaid Cymru-Conservative marginal. The Tories cut Plaid's majority to 1,100 in 1992, but it is worth noting that Labour was a strong third in 1992.
