Blaydon, embracing the south-west fringes of the Tyneside conurbation, is familiar to most people, in name at least, from the traditional Geordie song, 'Blaydon Races'. There are some areas of Liberal Democrat strength in Gateshead, and a fair sprinkling of Conservative voters, but this remains essentially Labour territory.
