Bournemouth is the very model of a genteel Victorian South Coast seaside resort and its electorate is dominated by elderly and affluent owner-occupiers. As in much of comfortable southern England, the Liberal Democrats do quite well in local elections here, and are the main general election challengers to the Conservatives, who do, however, maintain a firm grip on the parliamentary constituency. Given that the Liberal Democrats did win a famous by-election in neighbouring Christchurch in 1993, it is dangerous to say 'never', but a Conservative loss here is almost unthinkable.
