The south-east Derbyshire seat of Erewash is named after the river which flows from north to south through the seat and enters the Trent near Long Eaton. Created in 1983 (but unchanged in the latest boundary revisions), it is an amalgam of two rather different former divisions. Ilkeston was held to be safely Labour, although trending away from them as its mining industry had closed down, while SE Derbyshire was a Conservative-Labour marginal, more usually held by the former. In any case, Erewash has gone Tory in each of its three general elections so far.
In fact, the Conservatives won Erewash very easily in 1983, by 11,000. Labour have increased their vote substantially since then, although more at the expense of minor party candidates than as a direct swing against the Tories. In 1992 there was still a gap of 5,703, requiring a swing of 4.5 per cent - possible, but difficult.
