Unlike the four other seats within the ancient kingdom of Fife, which are all industrial and working-class, Fife NE is more typified by elegant tourist resorts, prosperous farming country, and the ancient university town of St Andrews, all good Conservative country. But the general decline of the Tory Party in Scotland has taken its toll - in 1987 the sitting Conservative MP was unseated by Liberal Democrat Menzies Campbell. Campbell strengthened his grip in 1992, and looks like the firm favourite to retain it this time.
