The light industrial and market town of Kettering in Northamptonshire and its surrounding agricultural countryside, sprinkled with comfortable villages and rural industries, contains no strong Labour tradition, although Labour can do surprisingly well in good local election years. Roger Freeman holds the parliamentary seat for the Conservatives with a majority that could only be overturned by Labour with a 10 per cent swing. If this were to happen, Labour would be heading for a landslide victory in Westminster.
