This is a rural Home Counties seat, not close-in London commuting territory like much of Surrey, and it shows true blue South Eastern rural preferences. The Conservatives have always won the seat easily, except for a narrow squeak in a 1984 by-election, when a strong Liberal Democrat challenge nearly deprived Virginia Bottomley of her entr to parliament - her majority was just 2,599. She now holds the constituency with a safe majority of 15,000, and although the Lib Dems are very successful in local politics here, they can have little hope of unseating her.
