Although the upwardly mobile West London suburb of Uxbridge seems solidly Tory country now, it was once a Tory-Labour marginal, held by Labour from 1945-59 and 1966-70. But Uxbridge rapidly increased its owner-occupation ratio during the 1980s to 70 per cent, and has a relatively small percentage of non-white residents. Such seats moved rapidly away from Labour during the 1980s. Although New Labour may succeed in cutting incumbent MP Michael Shersby's majority, they face a mountainous task here, although boundary changes make their life slightly easier.
