This seat essentially comprises the city of Derry. It was created in 1983 from a heavily gerrymandered situation that ensured permanent unionist control in the area. Foyle, however, is solidly nationalist, and has been held since 1983 by John Hume, the SDLP leader, a native son of Derry. The only threat to Hume is Sinn Fein and they have a poor third-place showing behind the DUP. His majority may drop, but he should be back this time. |
