This predominantly rural mixed-religion seat is the core of the old South Down seat, held by controversial politician Enoch Powell from 1974 until he lost to the SDLP's Eddie McGrady in 1987 (following boundary changes). Powell had left the Conservative Party to espouse the Ulster Unionist cause, with which he had been long associated. Boundary changes this time seem likely to work in McGrady's favour, and the SDLP may well be re-elected with an enlarged majority. |
