It is the Liberal Democrats' lack of success that makes rural Cambridgeshire such fertile Tory country. Unlike in many rural English counties, the Lib Dems have had little success in local elections, and Liberal Clement Freud's 14-year tenure as MP for the Isle of Ely/NE Cambs has changed little. In SE Cambs, the Lib Dem vote fell from 27 to 20 per cent, and they have no hope of seriously challenging Tory James Paice this time.
