The new seat of Clwyd West embraces coastal retirement resorts such as Colwyn Bay and Abergele, and extends inland through rural areas to also include the small and more industrial town of Ruthin. The more elderly electorate on the coast predominate, with a clear preference for the Conservatives. The Tories will expect to hold this seat, but a 6 or 7 per cent swing would put Labour perilously close to winning.
