Beware! This seat is not the successor to the constituency of the same name which was contested at the last election, and resulted in a fairly easy win for the Conservative Gary Streeter. It is largely composed of the former marginal Plymouth Drake, held by Dame Janet Fookes by just 2,013 votes over Labour in April 1992.

In fact this division, which covers the central part of the great south-western seafaring city of Plymouth, is now even more difficult for the Conservatives to hold than before, as the extensive boundary changes in the city mean that had it been contested last time it would have returned a Tory with a majority of only about 1,000. It therefore must lie towards the top of Labour's target list of Conservative-held marginals - and indeed they will want to get considerably further down the list than this.
